If you’re travelling with a baby or toddler, sleep can be the first thing to unravel. Whether it’s a bright hotel room, a noisy sibling, or just an unfamiliar environment, disrupted sleep leads to overtired children and stressed-out parents. NOT an ideal holiday set up!
I was invited to try the SlumberPod as it’s making it’s UK debut. In this SlumberPod review, I’ll share my honest thoughts as both a mum and a child sleep specialist – and explain why this blackout tent might be the best sleep travel solution I’ve tested.

What Is the SlumberPod and How Does It Work?
The Slumber Pod is a portable blackout canopy that fits over your child’s sleep space. It creates a private sleep space over toddler cots, a toddler air mattress, travel cot or “pack b play”. The SlumberPod team state it blocks out up to 95% of light, helping babies and toddlers sleep more soundly, even in brightly lit rooms or shared spaces.
It works with:
- Travel cots, mini cribs and standard cots
- Toddler airbeds and floor mattresses
- Mini cribs and playards/pack n play.
Think of it as a private sleep pod that gives your child their own dark space. On holiday it would provide a distraction-free space to rest – whether you’re room-sharing on holiday or staying in an unfamiliar environment.

SlumberPod Review: The Setup
One of the standout features? It’s genuinely easy to assemble (check out my video below). I didn’t read the instructions(!) and still had it up in under five minutes (I’ve been camping and putting up tent poles for 40+ years! But honestly, it’s super easy). Taking it down took even less time, about two minutes and it was in it’s handy carrying bag. Most baby products are just a faff!
I actually think this makes it an idea product for day trips too, where you have little ones who just need an optimal sleep set up (white noise, blackout curtains, separate space) for a good night’s sleep or nap.
The lightweight aluminium poles bend into place and slot into the base straps, then clip into position. It comes in a compact travel bag that fits neatly in a suitcase or carry on luggage. It weighs less than 2.5kg which is good too.
There’s a large zip-down panel for easy access to the sleeping area, side flaps for airflow, and a pocket for an optional fan (sold by Slumber pod) ideal for warm weather on holiday or to double as white noise.
Is the SlumberPod Safe for Babies and Toddlers?
Yes, safety has clearly been prioritised. The SlumberPod has passed essential safety testing and includes:
- Breathable fabric for proper ventilation
- An option to use with a fan for additional airflow
- A monitor viewing pocket, so you can check in without disturbing your child
According to the SlumberPod team, safety has been a priority from day one. The product meets all required safety standards in the UK, Europe, the US, and Canada. The fabric is breathable and air-permeable, and additional assessments found a low risk of CO₂ rebreathing – even without the optional fan or ventilation flaps open. It’s recommended from 4 months+, in line with safe sleep guidance suggesting newborns be kept within direct line of sight.
The SlumberPod team also stress that this is not a “crib tent.” It doesn’t attach to or interfere with your baby’s cot or travel bed, meaning the original safety of the sleep space remains intact. It simply stretches over the top to create a dark, private sleep zone with plenty of airflow.
How Does it Compare to the Competition?
Compared to other blackout sleep solutions, the SlumberPod really stands out. While there are other portable blackout tents on the market, most don’t have the generous canopy height that allows a baby or toddler to stand up comfortably inside – making the SlumberPod a much better fit for children aged 9 months and up.
Traditional options like suction-cup blackout blinds can be fiddly to install, don’t always fit every window, and often fail to create a reliably dark sleep space. And crib tents that attach to the sleep surface can raise safety concerns, particularly for younger babies. That’s why, in terms of both practicality and safety, the SlumberPod is the option I’d recommend you purchase.
Why I Recommend the SlumberPod (Especially in the UK)
Here’s what impressed me the most:
- Fits a wide range of setups – including toddler beds, travel cots, and floor beds
- Roomy enough for toddlers to stand up, making it suitable well into preschool age (as demonstrated by my son Charlie – who’s 4)
- Blocks out light effectively – not just dimming, but proper blackout – it was amazingly dark!
- High quality and well made – soft fabric, strong poles, and the stitching looked great
- Super portable – folds down into a small, lightweight travel bag that you can pop into your luggage
As such, it’s a game changer for:
- Early risers
- Room-sharing families
- Super sensitive sleepers (where even the door being left slightly ajar will wake them up)
- Maintaining a sleep routine while away from home
SlumberPod Review: Any Downsides?
Just a couple of things to be aware of:
- The packaging is still clearly aimed at the US market (e.g. “play yard”, “spandex”). Minor, but noticeable.
- The fan is sold separately – and while not essential, I’d recommend it for airflow and natural white noise if you’re heading somewhere warm. You can buy packages that include the fan too.
- It’s a premium product with premium pricing. The pricing varies, but on Amazon at the moment it’s just shy of £200. Although, if your child fits into one of the 4 categories above, I think it’s worth it! Especially if you travel often – working out the price per nap/sleep will probably make it seem more reasonable.
- I think my main concern was that Charlie (chief product tester: age 4) wouldn’t like being zipped away. It really wasn’t an issue (as you can see in the photo below!). However I’d recommend having plenty of playtime in their cot with this over it before you go so they get used to it.

Who Is the SlumberPod Best For?
The SlumberPod is ideal for:
- Babies aged 6 months and up in a separate sleep space
- Toddlers and preschoolers still in cots or travel beds
- Families sharing rooms at home or away
- Children who wake easily from light or noise
- Parents who travel often and want consistent sleep setups
