Prioritise our sleep? As parents?! As a child sleep specialist, I spend my working hours supporting parents through sleep regressions, night wakes, and bedtime battles. I remind them daily how critical sleep is for their children’s development, mood, and immune function. But somewhere along the way, I stopped applying that same logic to myself.
Like so many parents, I was functioning on autopilot: collapsing into bed at the end of the day, never questioning the worn-out mattress beneath me or how it was affecting my own rest. I focused on blackout blinds for my child, white noise machines, the best cot mattress I could find, all while sleeping on something that was doing absolutely nothing for my back.
So, this year, I finally made a change. I upgraded my own mattress.
And I can’t believe I waited so long.

Prioritise Our Sleep – At Last
I was kindly gifted the Origin Hybrid Pro mattress, and after weeks of sleeping on it, I can honestly say: it’s been a game-changer. For the first time in years, I’m waking up without a sore back or neck. I’m not overheating or tossing and turning. And I genuinely feel like my body is being supported, not swallowed or left sagging.
It made me realise something I often tell parents, but had clearly forgotten to apply to myself:
Sleep isn’t a luxury. It’s a biological need.
What Happens When We Sleep Poorly?
The science on adult sleep health is clear: consistently poor sleep contributes to increased risk of depression, anxiety, weakened immunity, hormonal imbalance, weight gain, and even heart disease. Lack of restorative sleep affects memory, patience, concentration, and mood! All things we really need as parents.
On top of that, poor sleep quality can compound stress and burnout. And one of the most overlooked causes of poor sleep? The surface we’re sleeping on.
A 2011 study found that people sleeping on newer, medium-firm mattresses experienced less pain and improved sleep quality compared to those using older, worn-out ones. This matches what many sleep experts recommend: for most adults, a medium-firm mattress provides the best balance between support and comfort, helping maintain spinal alignment while preventing pressure points. Certainly needed to prioritise our sleep!
Why Medium-Firm Is Often the Sweet Spot
The Origin Hybrid Pro is apparently rated at around 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, which lands it comfortably in the medium-firm zone. This is important, especially for adults who sleep on their back or side (like me).
Prioritise our sleep and physical health:
- Spinal alignment matters. During sleep, your spine should stay in a neutral position – not curving unnaturally due to sagging hips or unsupported shoulders. Medium-firm mattresses tend to do this best, particularly with a zoned support system like Origin’s.
- Too soft = spinal misalignment. If a mattress is too plush, your body sinks. Your spine curves. You might wake up with a sore lower back or neck strain, or simply feeling like you didn’t get restorative rest.
- Too hard = pressure points. Conversely, an overly firm mattress doesn’t give enough at the hips and shoulders, which can cut off circulation and cause pain, particularly for side sleepers.
Medium-firm sits in that goldilocks zone, supportive without being rigid, and cushioned without being saggy. That’s exactly how the Origin Hybrid Pro feels to sleep on.
So What’s Inside the Origin Hybrid Pro?
Let’s break it down:
- Graphite-infused foam: Helps regulate temperature (essential for hot sleepers like me), drawing heat away from the body.
- Microcoils and pocket springs: Offer targeted support and reduce motion transfer – ideal if you co-sleep, or your partner tosses and turns.
- Pressure-relief layers: These contour to the body without that ‘stuck’ feeling you sometimes get with memory foam.
- CertiPUR® standard foams: Free from harmful heavy metals and low in VOCs, which matters to me from a health and sustainability standpoint, though I’d love to see clearer third-party certification transparency on their site.
The result? A mattress that’s supportive, breathable, and genuinely comfortable and helps prioritise our sleep!

The Parent Perspective: Why This Matters
I often tell families: “You can’t pour from an empty cup.” But truthfully? I wasn’t sleeping well. I wasn’t prioritising my physical rest. And it showed. Not just in my back pain, but in my energy levels, mood, and patience (mainly with my family).
Getting a high-quality mattress isn’t just about indulgence. It’s about function. When we sleep well, everything else is easier, work, parenting, relationships, focus, emotional regulation. It’s foundational – time to prioritise our sleep!
And just like we carefully choose safe, firm, breathable mattresses for our children, we deserve to do the same for ourselves.
Signs You Might Need a Mattress Upgrade
If you’re reading this and wondering whether your sleep surface is letting you down, here are a few tell-tale signs:
- You wake up stiff, sore, or with back pain
- You feel like you’re sleeping “in” the bed, not on it
- You’re constantly too hot or cold during the night
- Your mattress is 7+ years old and starting to sag
- You sleep better in hotels than at home
If you nodded along to any of those, it might be time to prioritise your sleep too.

The Takeaway
Choosing to prioritise our sleep and upgrading my mattress was one of the best things I’ve done for my physical and mental health in a long time. And I say that not as a sleep consultant, but as a tired mum who needed better rest.
The Origin Hybrid Pro has delivered what it promised, comfort, support, and quality sleep. But more than that, it’s reminded me that I matter too. My sleep matters. My health matters. And yours does too.
If you’ve spent the last few years investing in your child’s sleep, now might be the time to finally invest in your own.
