Working on Realistic Newborn Sleep Foundations in 2026: Easy Tips for Happy Rested Babies!

by | Sep 16, 2024 | Common Sleep Problems, Newborn Tips, Sleep Training Techniques

As a new parent, one of the most common concerns is whether your newborn is getting enough sleep and what you can do to help them rest. It’s no secret that sleep can be one of the most challenging aspects of life with a new baby. But setting realistic (and achievable) newborn sleep foundations can make the experience far less stressful and more manageable.

As new parents, we’re often bombarded with advice about sleep – how to get more of it, how to help our babies sleep better, and when (oh when!) they’ll sleep through the night. But let’s clear something up: newborn sleep is a journey, not a destination. In the first 16 weeks, it’s all about laying those essential sleep foundations rather than jumping into sleep training.

So, what exactly does “setting healthy sleep foundations” mean? It’s not about rigid routines or expecting your baby to magically sleep through the night. Rather, it’s about creating the right conditions and habits to gently encourage your baby toward better sleep, both now and in the future. Here’s how to get started.

In my book Newborn Sleep Foundations: A Handy Guide for the First 16 Weeks, I focus on establishing healthy sleep foundations rather than formal sleep training during these early days. If you’re looking for expert guidance, tips, and encouragement on creating a positive sleep environment for your newborn, my book is the perfect place to start. You can grab your copy here.

What to Expect (Hint: It’s Not Perfection)

First things first: newborn sleep is highly unpredictable. One night they’ll sleep for three hours straight, and the next, they might wake every 45 minutes. Both scenarios are perfectly normal.

In the first few months, babies need multiple naps, night feeds, and a lot of parental support to fall asleep. You might see anything from ten-minute cat naps to three-hour stretches, all in the same day! So if your baby isn’t following a neat little schedule, don’t worry, they’re still right on track.

Focus on Age-Appropriate Goals

Instead of aiming for a mythical “sleeping through the night,” focus on age-appropriate goals. At this stage, it’s about setting up gentle routines, getting to know your baby’s sleep cues, and making small adjustments to improve their sleep environment. Multiple night wakings and feeds are completely normal, and pushing for a full night of sleep is an unrealistic (and stressful!) goal for both of you.

But, by setting up a few sleep foundations, you’re paving the way for smoother nights ahead. And yes, that future where you might actually sleep again is coming.

Bedtime Routines: The Sooner, The Better

Even at a young age, a consistent bedtime routine can work wonders. No, it doesn’t need to be fancy or take an hour, but the predictability of a routine helps signal to your baby that sleep is coming.

Think simple: a little feed, a nappy change, and some quiet time in a dimly lit room. Try adding some gentle music or white noise, and you’re on your way to a calm, soothing bedtime ritual. While it might not result in immediate 12-hour stretches (if only!), it will help your little one transition from the excitement of the day to the peace of nighttime sleep.

And trust me, this routine will serve you well through toddlerhood and beyond.

Create a Sleep-Friendly Environment

Newborns can sleep through almost anything, until they can’t. As they grow, their sensitivity to noise, light, and temperature increases. So, one of the easiest ways to start building good sleep habits is by creating a perfect sleep environment.

Blackout blinds? Yes, please. White noise? Even better. A swaddle or sleeping bag that keeps your baby comfy and snug without overheating? Absolutely essential. These little tweaks can make a world of difference, helping your baby settle quicker and stay asleep longer.

Introduce Gentle Sleep Cues

Babies are creatures of habit (aren’t we all?). Introducing gentle sleep cues early on can help them associate certain activities with sleep. This might be the sound of white noise, the feel of a swaddle, or even a simple phrase like “night night, sleep tight” that you whisper as you put them down.

The aim isn’t to make your baby reliant on these cues forever but to create a sleep environment that feels familiar and safe. Over time, these gentle nudges will help your baby transition into sleep with less resistance.

What You Can Control

In the early days (and beyond) sleep is governed by sleep pressure. You can’t control when or how long your baby sleeps, you can control their sleep environment, the timing of bedtime, and how you respond to their cues. Take comfort in the fact that each small step you take is laying the groundwork for healthier sleep patterns later on.
