An Interview with Gemma Coe About Her Handy Newborn Sleep Book, Upcoming Release in August 2024.

by | Aug 1, 2024 | Newborn Tips, Sleep Training Techniques

We had the pleasure of sitting down with Gemma Coe to discuss her new newborn sleep book, “Newborn Sleep Foundations: A Handy Guide for the First 16 Weeks.” Here’s what she had to say about the inspiration, process, and insights behind her upcoming release.

UPDATE!! It’s available on Amazon now!!

Introduction

Q: What is the title of your book, and what genre does it belong to?

Gemma: The title of my newborn sleep book is “Newborn Sleep Foundations: A Handy Guide to the First 16 Weeks.” It falls under the non-fiction, self-help, and parenting genres.

Q: Can you provide a brief summary of the book?

Gemma: This newborn sleep book brings all the information from my Newborn Sleep Foundations Package and more to create a comprehensive guide to the first 16 weeks of your newborn’s life. You can read it cover to cover or simply dip in and out of the chapters that feel the most relevant to you right now.

In this newborn sleep book, we take a holistic look at children’s sleep, considering all the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle: the sleep environment, routine, and how the baby falls asleep, in addition to how much sleep they are actually getting. We also keep in mind the whole family unit and how they are bearing up, including siblings, work pressures, feeding struggles, developmental progress, and other factors.

This book is not about sleep training your child. Instead, it’s designed to help you navigate the first steps, set the sleep foundations, and understand the principles of creating a happy, healthy sleep setup for your new baby.

Inspiration and Motivation

Q: What inspired you to write this newborn sleep book?

Gemma: This newborn sleep book was born from the desire to make my popular ‘Newborn Sleep Foundations’ package more accessible to new parents. This comprehensive support package aims to support new parents with sleep in the early days, focusing on establishing healthy foundations and covering all the basics. Many who sign up for Newborn Sleep Foundations tell me they just want an opportunity to ask lots of questions or want to do things right from the start. Often, they’ve been poor sleepers themselves or shift workers and need to prioritise sleep for overall family health and wellbeing. If this sounds like you, then you’re my audience!

Q: Was there a particular moment or experience that sparked the idea for this newborn sleep book?

Gemma: The idea for this newborn sleep book didn’t come from a single moment but rather from numerous conversations with parents who felt overwhelmed and exhausted. They often shared their struggles with me, and I realised there was a significant need for a resource that provided practical, compassionate advice for those crucial first 16 weeks. Parents are particularly vulnerable during this time and susceptible to trying or buying unhelpful gimmicks to get them through it. I wanted to be the voice of reason.

Q: What message or themes do you hope readers take away from your newborn sleep book?

Gemma: I hope readers take away a sense of confidence and reassurance. Understanding what’s ‘normal’ for newborn sleep and how to create a healthy sleep environment can make a world of difference. My goal is to help parents feel empowered to support their baby’s sleep in a way that works for their unique family dynamics.

Writing Process

Q: How long did it take you to write the newborn sleep book?

Gemma: It took the best part of two years! Balancing writing with my busy schedule meant the process was slow but steady.

Q: Can you describe your writing routine or process for this newborn sleep book?

Gemma: I wrote in chunks around my client work. My days are filled with consultations and support sessions (and school runs!), so finding dedicated time for writing was challenging. I would often write in the evenings or weekends, whenever I could carve out a few hours of quiet time. It was a lesson in patience and persistence.

Q: Were there any challenges you faced during the writing process of your newborn sleep book? How did you overcome them?

Gemma: Time constraints were a major challenge, as was trying to navigate the language needed for tired parents to make it helpful. To overcome these, I focused on creating clear, concise chapters that could be easily digested, even by sleep-deprived parents. I also enlisted feedback from parents who tested the material and provided invaluable insights.

Editing and Cover Design

Q: What was the editing process like for you with this newborn sleep book?

Gemma: The editing process was eye-opening. I soon realised I needed to work with a professional editor, and she’s been fantastic. Her expertise helped transform my drafts into a polished manuscript that’s both engaging and informative.

Q: How did you work with your editor to refine the manuscript of your newborn sleep book?

Gemma: The editing process took longer than I thought, but it was worth every moment. My editor and I worked closely to ensure the content was clear and accessible. We went through several rounds of revisions, fine-tuning the language and structure. It’s quite a skill that I’d never appreciated before. In hindsight, I should have prioritised my English GCSE a bit more!

Q: Can you share some insights into the cover design process for your newborn sleep book?

Gemma: I wanted the cover to really pop and be bold! I believe the cover should immediately convey the essence of the book. After brainstorming ideas and discussing with designers, we settled on a design that’s vibrant and inviting, capturing the warmth and support that the book offers.

Personal Insights

Q: How has writing this newborn sleep book impacted you personally?

Gemma: Writing this newborn sleep book has been quite a journey. I’ve done so much research. The sleep bits were the easy parts, but structure, editing, release, and promotion are all skill sets on their own. I’ve learnt so much and can’t wait to get started on my next book (hint: it’s about sleep in the toddler and pre-school years!).

Q: What have you learnt about yourself through this journey of writing your newborn sleep book?

Gemma: Just like I say to my clients, slow and steady always wins the race. Be the tortoise. They win in the end. This experience reinforced the importance of perseverance and patience, both in writing and in life.

Conclusion

Q: When is the official release date of your newborn sleep book?

Gemma: The official release date is August 2024.

Q: Where can readers pre-order or purchase the newborn sleep book?

Gemma: Readers can pre-order or purchase the book on Amazon. It will also be available in other bookstores and sellers starting in September 2024.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to share with your readers about your newborn sleep book?

Gemma: Thank you for your support and interest in my work. I hope this newborn sleep book helps you and your family navigate the early days of newborn sleep with confidence and ease. Stay tuned for more updates and insights on my upcoming projects!
