Bedtime can often feel like a challenge for both parents and children, especially when little ones struggle to wind down after a busy day. However, incorporating mindfulness techniques for bedtime may offer a calm and effective way to ease them into sleep. Mindfulness, meditation, and breathwork provide children with valuable tools to regulate their emotions, manage any lingering excitement or stress from the day, and create a peaceful bedtime atmosphere.
These practices are not only beneficial for calming your child but also for fostering a sense of connection and presence in your evening routine. With just a few simple activities, you can help your child transition from the busyness of the day to a relaxed, sleep-ready state. Let’s take a look at how introducing mindfulness into bedtime can lead to more peaceful nights and support your child’s emotional well-being.

Why Mindfulness Matters for Kids
Before we dive into how mindfulness can transform bedtime, let’s chat about what it is and why it works.
Mindfulness, meditation, and breathwork aren’t just for us stressed-out adults. These practices are incredible for children too, especially when it comes to settling down for sleep. Here’s a quick look at what I mean by each:
- Mindfulness: This is all about paying attention to the present moment. It could be as simple as noticing how warm their blanket feels on their skin or the sound of your voice as you read a bedtime story. Mindfulness helps kids become aware of their emotions and sensations, promoting a sense of calm.
- Meditation: An ancient practice that helps to quieten the mind and focus. Even just sitting still for a moment or focusing on their breathing can help children feel more settled and grounded.
- Breathwork: This involves conscious breathing techniques that help regulate the nervous system. By teaching kids to focus on their breath, it’s a great way to calm anxious feelings and encourage relaxation.
Practicing mindfulness, meditation or breathwork before bed can help turn evenings into a time of peace, rather than chaos, helping both you and your child unwind after a long day.

5 Mindfulness Techniques for Bedtime
If bedtime currently feels stressful and like a battle zone, these mindfulness techniques might just be the secret weapon you need. Give them a go and see how they transform your evenings. There will probably be one or two that are a ‘good fit’, certain exercises that your child enjoys.
- Deep Breathing Exercises
Pretend to smell a flower (inhale) and blow out birthday candles (exhale). It’s fun and effective! Deep breathing helps calm the nervous system and sends signals to the brain that it’s time to relax. - Guided Imagery
Make up a peaceful story for bedtime, maybe a walk through a magical forest or a trip to a quiet beach. As you tell the story, encourage your child to close their eyes and imagine the sights, sounds, and feelings of being there. It’s a gentle way to engage their imagination while calming their mind. - Body Scan
Lie down together and guide your child through a body scan. Start with their toes and move all the way to the top of their head, asking them to notice how each part of their body feels and then to let go and relax it. This helps release any tension they might be holding onto from the day and can promote mindfulness. - Mindful Colouring
Set aside a few minutes before bed, perhaps as the last activity, for quiet colouring. It’s a simple, calming activity that lets your child focus on the present moment without distractions. It also helps to avoid screen time in the hour run up to bed which has other benefits. - Gratitude Practice
End the day on a positive note by sharing three things you’re grateful for. This creates a sense of contentment and promotes emotional well-being, making it easier for them to drift off to sleep.

Benefits of Yoga for Bedtime
Adding a few simple yoga poses to your child’s evening routine can work wonders, too. Yoga incorporates mindfulness, meditation and breathwork all in one! In addition, yoga not only improves flexibility and strength but also helps calm the mind and body, perfect for winding down before bed. Child-friendly poses like the butterfly or child’s pose are great for toddlers and preschoolers. Incorporating yoga helps release any pent-up energy and promotes mindfulness, setting the stage for a smoother transition to sleep.

Using Audiobooks as a Calming Mechanism
Audiobooks can be another brilliant tool for bedtime relaxation. Choose calming stories or soothing music to create a peaceful atmosphere. The rhythmic sound of a narrator’s voice can help lull your little one into a relaxed state, making it easier for them to drift off to sleep.
One of my favourites is the Morphee Sleep Aid, which offers guided meditations and relaxation exercises, designed especially for children. They get to pick the stories which is really cool. Also the Tonies sleepy friends range are really calming if you have a Toniebox.
