As toddlers grow, they start to become more independent and curious about the world around them, often leading to challenges with their sleep routines. Whether it’s early morning wake-ups or late-night visits to your room, these disruptions can be exhausting for everyone involved. This is where a day and night clock can come to the rescue, providing a simple visual cue to help your little one understand when it’s time to rest and when it’s okay to get up.

What is a Day and Night Clock?
A day and night clock is a sleep training tool that uses easy-to-understand visuals, like the sun for daytime and the moon for nighttime, to signal when it’s time to sleep and when it’s okay to wake. You’ll also see versions with animals awake or asleep. These clocks are designed to help toddlers, who may not yet grasp the concept of time, recognise visual indicators that guide their behaviour. By giving them a clear distinction between day and night, you can help minimise those early morning wake-ups and reinforce a more consistent sleep routine.

Why Use a Day and Night Clock?
For many toddlers, especially those transitioning out of a cot or starting to experience newfound independence, it can be tricky to understand when it’s still too early to get up or when it’s time to stay in bed. A day and night clock provides a simple, effective solution for:
- Preventing Early Wake-ups: Toddlers often wake early in the morning, thinking it’s time to start the day. A day and night clock can visually remind them it’s still nighttime, encouraging them to stay in bed a little longer.
- Creating Consistency: Toddlers thrive on routines, and by consistently using a day and night clock, you’re reinforcing the message that certain times are for sleep, while others are for play.
- Reducing Bedtime Resistance: If your toddler frequently resists going to bed, the clock’s visual cue can be a helpful tool to show them it’s time to wind down, rather than engaging in a bedtime battle.
- Fostering Independence: A day and night clock helps toddlers feel more in control by providing them with a clear signal they can follow on their own, building their confidence in staying in bed.
How Does a Day and Night Clock Work?
The basic premise is simple: the clock displays different images or colours to represent when it’s time to sleep and when it’s okay to get up. For example, the moon or a dark image will signal it’s still nighttime, while the sun or a bright image will indicate it’s morning and time to start the day.
Some clocks also offer customisable settings, allowing you to adjust the times according to your toddler’s routine. For instance, if your toddler wakes at 5 am and you’d prefer a 6:30 wake-up, you can set the clock to show the sun at the desired time, gradually helping them extend their sleep (go slow with this – just extending 5-10 mins every few days, no toddler will stay still for an extra 1.5 hours!

Alternative to the Day and Night Clock
If you’re looking for an alternative to a traditional day and night clock, a colour-changing lightbulb might be just what you need. These bulbs can be set to different colours at specific times, offering a similar visual cue to help your child understand when it’s time to stay in bed and when it’s okay to get up. You can easily integrate this into your toddler’s sleep routine without needing a separate clock device. If you already have a Hatch machine, it will do this for you.
For example, I recommend you set the light to a dim red glow all night (red=bed), switching to a bright green in the morning to signal that it’s time to get up (green=go!). This allows for a seamless transition and adds a fun element to your child’s room.

Introducing Sleep Visual Aids and Resources
Alongside using a day and night clock or a colour-changing lightbulb, adding visual aids like sleep flashcards can help reinforce sleep habits and routines. These flashcards are designed to guide toddlers through the steps of their bedtime routine in a fun and engaging way, which can help them understand what’s expected. You can find my flashcards available for purchase here.
For parents struggling with ongoing bedtime battles, I also offer a comprehensive bedtime battles course, where I dive into strategies like using calming techniques and introducing routines that can significantly improve bedtime. You can explore more about the course here.
Tips for Using a Day and Night Clock Successfully
Here are a few tips to make the most out of using a day and night clock:
- Pair it with a bedtime routine: Make sure your toddler has a consistent bedtime routine leading up to using the clock. This could include bath time, reading a story, or some calming activities like mindfulness or yoga.
- Reinforce the message with praise: When your toddler follows the clock and stays in bed until it’s time to get up, offer plenty of praise and positive reinforcement.
- Be patient: It’s normal for toddlers to test the boundaries, especially at first. Stick with it, and over time, your little one will begin to associate the clock’s signals with their sleep routine.
- Stay flexible: If your toddler wakes up just before the clock changes, gently remind them it’s still nighttime but acknowledge that they’re getting close to wake-up time. This will encourage them to stick with it without feeling frustrated.
Is a Day and Night Clock Right for Your Toddler?
If early wake-ups or bedtime battles are a regular challenge, a day and night clock, or its alternative, a colour-changing lightbulb, could be a valuable addition to your toolkit. While it won’t solve every sleep issue overnight, it can provide a consistent visual cue that helps reinforce your toddler’s sleep routine. Paired with other sleep strategies, such as a calm bedtime environment and consistent routines, it can significantly improve your toddler’s sleep habits.
