One of the most exciting milestones is transitioning from a cot to your child’s first bed. It’s a big step for your child, but it can also be a bit daunting, both for them and for you. Making sure the transition goes smoothly is key to ensuring your child continues to get the sleep they need without too many bumps along the way.
In this blog, we’ll guide you through the signs that your child is ready for their first bed, how to make the move a positive experience, and some common challenges you might encounter. Plus, I’ll share some top tips and resources to support you during this transition.

Is Your Child Ready for Their First Bed?
Most children make the move to their first bed between the ages of 2 and 3, though every child is different. Personally, if you can hold off until 3+ that’s great (as they’ve started to master impulse control).
I go into more detail on when to move from cot to bed in my blog post here, but in summary…
Here are some signs your child may be ready for this exciting change:
- Climbing out of the cot – Safety first! If your little one is becoming an escape artist, it’s time for a bed.
- Potty training success – Many toddlers who are successfully potty training during the night will benefit from the freedom of being able to get in and out of bed to use the toilet. They can start to master this independently. You may want to consider a nighttime potty station in their room.
- Asking for a ‘big kid’ bed – If your child shows interest in having a bed like the grown-ups, it’s a good time to consider the switch. Even better if they can tell you they’ll stay in bed until morning!
If your child is already showing these signs, it might be time to explore the best bed for them.

Choosing Your Child‘s First Bed
You may be able to transition your current cot into a bed and this is a great place to start! It maintains the familiarity, is close to the ground and you get to keep the same mattress! Also, if the transition is tricky you can go back to putting the sides back on and trying again a few weeks or months later.
If you can’t transition your current cot bed, or are looking to move up to a larger size then read on…
When choosing your child’s first bed, there are a few key factors to consider:
- Safety – Ensure the bed is low to the ground to prevent falls. You can also add safety rails or bed bumpers to help your child feel more secure.
- Comfort – A mattress that’s just the right firmness is important for supporting your child’s growing body.
- Familiarity – To make the transition easier, consider using the same bedding your child is already used to. You may even want to keep them in the same sleeping bag, just introducing one change at a time. If they’re looking forward to the change then you could even let them pick out a new duvet cover featuring their favourite character to make the bed more enticing.
Note: duvets require dexterity, especially when waking at night, finding it and replacing it. That’s quite an advanced skill! See my blog on transitioning from a sleeping bag to a duvet here.

Making the Move: How to Transition to you Child’s First Bed Smoothly
Once you’ve chosen your child’s first bed, it’s time to think about how to ease your child into it. Here are some strategies to help make the transition as smooth as possible:
- Keep the routine familiar – Stick to the same bedtime routine your child is used to. This consistency will help them feel secure in their new bed. Routines are familiar and familiarity brings comfort! If you’re still perfecting your bedtime routine, my Bedtime Battles Course and Flashcards include everything you need to help calm your child down before bed.
- Involve your child in the process – Allow them to help choose their first bed or bedding, or even ‘decorate’ their sleep space with their favourite stuffed animals. This gives them a sense of ownership and makes the move feel exciting.
- Practice during the day – Before you make the switch for good, encourage your child to spend some time in the new bed during the day. They could read books there, snuggle with their favourite toy, or even pretend to take a nap. This helps them get used to the new space without the pressure of falling asleep right away.
- If Applicable – Start with naps – If your child is hesitant to sleep in their new bed, try transitioning them for naps first. Daytime sleep can feel less intimidating and allows them to get used to the bed gradually.
- Be patient – Remember, this is a big step for your child. Expect some ups and downs, and try to stay consistent and calm throughout the process.
If your child is struggling with staying in their bed during this transition, you might benefit from my Flashcards for Independent Sleep. These visual aids can help your toddler understand their bedtime routine and stay in their own bed through the night.

Troubleshooting Common Challenges
Your child’s first bed is a major change, quite a bit milestone! There can be a few hiccups along the way. Here’s how to handle some of the most common challenges:
- Frequent Night Waking: Some children wake more frequently after transitioning to a bed, as the novelty of being able to get up at night can be hard to resist. Try reinforcing your child’s bedtime boundaries by using my visual aids or even considering an OK to wake light like a Gro Clock. This helps them understand when it’s time to sleep and when it’s okay to get up.
- Separation Anxiety: If your child is feeling nervous about being in their own bed, consider spending extra time with them in their room before lights out. A calming routine, perhaps with a Guided Meditation, can help them settle.
- Bedtime Battles: If the move has led to more resistance (or excitement) at bedtime, check out my Bedtime Battles Course. It’s packed with tips and techniques to help calm those bedtime tantrums and make bedtime a breeze.
- Early Waking and Getting Out of Bed: By the way, if you’re struggling with early wake-ups at this stage, my Early Morning Waking Masterclass has you covered!
